Boracay being drowned by tourist garbage!

The once pristine Philippine paradise island of Boracay is now beset by a garbage problem.  “We are smelling garbage and it is not good for the health of the children”- quipped a teacher whose school is located near the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Barangay Manoc-Manoc.  The source of the foul smell is the mountain of garbage brought to the MRF coming from the hotels and establishments in the islands – basically tourist garbage.

The DENR has stepped in and called the attention of Malay, Aklan Mayor Cicero Cawaling who is primarily responsible for the upkeep of the island.  DENR sources said that the MRF is a potential health risk not only to residents but to the visiting tourists as well.

In response, Mayor Cawaling has promised to empty the MRF and take the excess garbage out by barge to mainland Panay island for processing. The Mayor promised improvements in waste handling by the LGU after a June 22, 2017 visit by Secretary Cimatu.

Cimatu threatened that the Mayor may face charges under RA 9003 if the garbage problem is not addressed by the LGU.  “He may be liable for charges if this is not addressed immediately” added Secretary Cimatu.

Garbage has been a constant problem for Boracay having seen a growth in the establishments and hotels in the island.  Tourists, both local and international, continue to flock to Boracay island despite the hidden problem of waste disposal.

On a similar note, members of the House of Representatives were shocked to see the degradation of the island and has asked the Department of Tourism about its plans to keep Boracay from being destroyed.

A Sugar Baron that supported the Presidential candidacy of former DILG Secretary Mar Roxas in the last elections warned Pepsi Cola Philippines. Manuel Lamata, President of the United Sugar Producers Federation of the Philippines said that they will launch a Boycott against Pepsi Cola for its use of HFCS or fructose sugar.

“We will attack Pepsi, they are not innocent! They (PEPSI) are idiots! Their product contains HFCS. If they do not sit and talk with the Sugar Alliance, we will launch a boycott and protest against their products”, threatened Lamata.

In a separate meeting in Malacanang Palace, Lamata shouted at several government officials claiming that the government is not protecting the sugar monopoly by allowing the entry of fructose sugar which is being used as an alternative sweetener for powdered coffee, powdered juice and softdrinks by multinational beverage companies like Pepsi.

In response, Secretary Pinol called the Negros Sugar Baron and his associates “spoiled brats” for how he acted during the meeting, and for accusing him of accepting bribes from beverage manufacturers which he denied. Lamata and his group gave the DA Secretary the moniker “Money Pinol”.

Pinol had held in abeyance the issuance of Sugar Order No. 3 which was released by the Sugar Regulatory Administration which is under the Department of Agriculture.

Because of the protection of the sugar cartel in the Philippines, sugar remains in the “protected list “ of Philippine products which hampers ASEAN Economic Integration. All members of ASEAN under the pact will engage in free trade across its borders and sugar is hampering its implementation.

Secretary Pinol stated that there is a need for change and modernization in how the sugar business is conducted in the Philippines. Philippine remains one of the highest priced in the world market. Former SRA head Rafael “Lito” Cosculluela said: “We need to accept the reality that Philippine sugar is highly priced. And if additional taxes are imposed on those who use it, the prices of products will increase resulting in less buyers and even lesser demand for the Sugar industry.

The Senate is now hearing the proposed excise tax on sugar sweetened beverage (SSB) which is seen to increase the cost of basic goods for blue collar and poor Filipinos who are the patrons of instant coffee, softdrinks and powdered juice drinks.

PNP Chief Bato Dela Rosa for his part stated that shaming the policemen will send a clear message to others in the service.  He said that if there is someone who carries the biggest shame, it is him as head of the PNP as he has bad eggs in the service.  Senator Panfilo Lacson, a former police chief, for his part agreed to the process of shaming.

Gordon, Red Cross to help Manalo siblings

Manila, Philippines – In a radio interview on a popular radio program on DZRH, Red Cross Chairman Richard Gordon said that the Red Cross will help the Manalo siblings at the Tandang Sora compound in Quezon City.

Asked about the letter of Felix Nathaniel Angel Manalo and Lottie Manalo Hemedez seeking Philippine Red Cross humanitarian assistance, Gordon initially replied that he did not receive the letters sent to both his Senate Office and the Chairman’s office at the Red Cross in Mandaluyong City.

Upon further pressing by Milky Rigonan and News Anchor Joe Taruc about what help Gordon can provide, he said the matter should be referred to the DSWD as an added solution. He however relented and committed by saying at the end of the interview that the Red Cross will assist the Manalo sibllings on humanitarian grounds. “Tutulungan natin kahit kailangan mapasok tutulungan natin” was his parting statement.

Gordon who has been a known champion of citizen’s rights and disaster relief is a staunch advocate of human rights. He sits as Chairman of the powerful Senate Blue Ribbon Committee and the the Senate Justice Committee that has been looking into the extra judicial killings and alleged rub out of Albuerra Leyte Mayor Espinosa.

During the last election, Gordon was also supported by the powerful Philippine Church Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) who have been known for their block voting during elections.

Supporters of Angel Manalo and Lottie Manalo Hemedez were elated upon hearing the news report. However some had their reservations as to whether Gordon and the Red Cross would act immediately given the hesitance the Red Cross Chairman showed in the interview. They said: “Kung ang CHR (Commission on Human Rights) walang magawa, ano pa kaya ang Red Cross? Baka may utang na loob si Chairman sa Iglesia Ni Cristo, kaya di basta gumagalaw! Ang pagkakilala namin kay Gordon ay mabilis siya umaksyon at fair sa lahat!”

They called for impartiality in the matter and called on the Red Cross to act on its sworn mandate to help those who are in humanitarian crisis.

Currently the Manalo siblings have been walled in at the 36 Tandang Sora Compound. The Iglesia Ni Cristo has yet to make a statement.

November 23, 2016, Manila – In a letter to Red Cross Chairman and Senator Richard Gordon, Felix Nathaniel Angel Manalo and Lolita Manalo Hemedez requested immediate and urgent intervention and relief on the siege being conducted on their homes at 36 Tandang Sora St. Quezon City.

According to Angel and Lottie, the living conditions in the INC controlled compound have become inhuman where the basic necessities of food, water and medicines have been controlled by the security personnel of their brother Eduardo Manalo who is currently the sitting Executive Minister of the Iglesia Ni Cristo.

They also cited that their basic rights have been curtailed such as the right to freedom of movement and their right to have their lawyers confer and visit them. The letter described the corrugated sheet walls that have been built to surround the houses and also to surround the said INC Compound.

In recent months, 1 person has already died due to a heart attack within the said INC compound due to the conditions and lack of medical treatment.

The INC compound used to include the homes of former Executive Minister Erano G. Manalo, their Father, and homes of other siblings. All of which were demolished by the current INC leadership.

Electricity and water utilities to the homes have been purposely cut by the Church to force the two Manalo’s to evacuate. Reports on the internet also show photos of guards with long fire arms surrounding the houses forcing the residents to stay indoors further verifying the contents of the letter.

In their letter they said: “While we know the property we live in is ours, it is the subject of a property claim erroneously made by the Iglesia Ni Cristo.” and described conditions as “worst than Muntinlupa Bilibid Prison”.

Both Angel and Lottie were expelled by their brother from the Iglesia Ni Cristo after being accused of inspiring a reform movement within the church to battle corruption. This resulted in a purge of Ministers who were deemed loyal to the previous Executive Minister Erano G. Manalo.

The same letter noted that the siege has been ongoing for the last 4 months.

Time heals old political wounds-Laurel family calls for unity

In a rare interview granted by Celia Diaz Laurel to CNN Philippines, the matriarch of the Laurel family, during the 88th Birth Anniversary of former Vice President Salvador H. Laurel last Nov 18, 2016 she called for unity among Filipinos.  She said that we should all move forward, learn from the past and unite for the future of the Philippines. “This is what Doy Laurel would have wanted if he were still alive today.”

The simple and sublime celebration of Doy Laurel coincided with the controversial burial of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani where the former Vice President is also at rest.

As history would have it, Doy Laurel and Ferdinand Marcos were at the opposite sides of the political divide – Laurel being a staunch leader of the opposition united under his UNIDO party and Marcos the strongman who was then ruling the Philippines. Both Laurel and Marcos are members of the Upsilon Sigma Phi of the University of the Philippines, and despite being on opposite sides and of opposite beliefs would be courteous and respectful to one another because of their brotherly bonds.  It was in fact Marcos who called Doy to Hawaii during his waining days to discuss his proposal to return to the Philippines and be buried in his country, with Doy delivering the message in his official capacity as the Vice President and as a direct link to the wife of Ninoy Aquino, another Upsilonian, – then President Cory Aquino.

The revelations of this meeting are contained in the memoirs of the late Vice President.

In response to a loaded question by CNN Philippines reporter JC Gotinga meant to incite further controversy on the burial of Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, Mrs. Laurel responded by saying Marcos was a soldier and that he served in World War 2. She further added that Filipinos must follow our laws and find a common ground in the interest of national unity.  This is how we should move forward as a nation and this is how Doy Laurel would have wanted it – putting the interest of the nation above that of personal interest.

The Supreme Court decided to allow the burial of the late President Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, lifting a TRO that was filed at the lower courts to stop the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte allowing the controversial burial. The President was at the APEC Summit in Peru during the burial last Nov 18. Congressman Edcel Lagman said he will initiate a move in Congress to have the body of the late strongman exhumed from the sacred burial grounds.

Davao Blast kills 10

Chaos gripped the city of Davao as an explosion rocked the city night market in Roxas Ave. According to a statement released by the City of Davao, the explosion came from a SPA operating nearby.  The night market is a popular venue specially during weekends for residents and students from the nearby Ateneo Campus. Ten people where immediately killed by the blast with scores injured and wounded.

Emergency response units were immediately on the scene to assist the injured and rush them to several hospitals across the city.

Authorities are still determining the blast cause and actual source as some witnesses indicated that a second blast was also heard after the first one.  Speculation is rife that the blast was a terrorist retaliation for the hightened war against drugs or resulting from President Duterte’s all out war order against the Abu Sayaff.

Security measures have been set in place as the President declared a state of lawlessness nationwide where the Armed Forces and the Police have been tasked to increase visibility and conduct checkpoints all across the nation.

The President in an interview with media dispelled reports that he is declaring martial law.  He clarified that it is just a state of emergency where he will be able to “run the country according to his style”. Some opposition lawmakers have stated that some elements would want Martial Law to be implemented in the country and this event is just a pretext to such a situation.

On the other hand, the President assured the nation that Davao is safe and the investigation is ongoing as to the cause of the blast.  In the meantime, Davao has been put on the highest alert levels ever since Duterte came to power.

No to Cheap Energy -Philippine Catholic Church

Sept. 1, 2016, MANILA – The Philippine Catholic Church, specifically Balanga Bataan Bishop Ruperto Santos has opposed the opening of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.  In a statement he said: ” The BNPP damages life, livelihood and nature.  The BNPP is not the answer to the present needs of the people.  No one is safe from the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.”

The church has stiffened its position stating that reviving the BNPP puts the public at risk, most specially the residents of nearby provinces.

Government however has seen potential in the powerplant alleviating the rising cost of electricity. Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi says that opening the BNPP will provide additional 620 MW of electricity which will stabilize the whole grid in the long term.

“It is safe to use! It is an unpopular option but it is a cheap and long lasting option that will be good for our country” said Cusi during a hearing conducted by the Senate.

The Philippines has been lagging behind its neighbors in electric power generation, making it one of the countries in Asia with the highest electricity cost per kilowatt hour.  This high cost in power has been a factor why the Philippines has been sidelined by foreign investors who have opted to go to China, Vietnam and even Indonesia.

Other sources of power are depletable according to Cusi who identified Malampaya as a source that will be depleted by 2024. He said that it is the role of government to look for alternative sources that will lower electricity cost.  The Church has countered that alternatives can be found in renewable energy sources like the wind and the sun.

The benefits of opening the BNPP will be lower electricity rates for the consumer both private and business sectors; a stable supply for the whole grid and more investors coming to the Philippines which in turn creates more jobs.

Extensive studies are now being conducted on the BNPP and its viability and will be submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte for his approval. The government has been paying 27 Million pesos for the maintenance and upkeep of the mothballed plant.
